Sacraments

There are seven Sacraments of the Catholic Church: Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Confession, Marriage, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick. Except for the Sacrament of Holy Orders, all other Sacraments are performed at the parish.

Youngsters who have been enrolled in the CCD religious instruction classes for two years are eligible to receive Holy Eucharist, Penance and Confirmation. The classes are held on Sunday mornings following the 9:30 a.m. Mass. Parents are encouraged to attend Mass with their children.

Adults interested in becoming members of the Catholic Church, as well as baptized Catholics who wish to receive the sacraments of Confirmation, Reconciliation/Penance and Holy Eucharist, are referred to the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) process. Candidates typically will be in the process for a full year before receiving their sacraments. Classes meet year-round, and interested adults may join at any time. Classes meet weekly on Sunday afternoons following the 12:15  Mass (monthly during the summer).

Special instruction is required for most sacraments and parishioners are advised to follow the schedule below:

Baptism
Parents who wish to have their baby baptized at St. Francis Church should make arrangements at least two months in advance. Parents and Godparents are required to attend classes in preparation for the sacrament. To begin the process you must download and complete the Baptism Registration form. After completion please email the form back to Pat Pope at pat@stfrancishoboken.net

Holy Eucharist
Children enrolled in CCD classes on Sunday mornings are eligible to receive their First Communion following two years of instruction. Students should enroll as first graders in order to receive First Communion in second grade. CCD classes are held September through June in the Parish Center immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Parents are encouraged to attend Mass with their children.

Penance
CCD students who are preparing for First Communion also receive the sacrament of Penance at a special service.

Confirmation
CCD students receive the sacrament of Confirmation in eighth grade. Candidates must attend classes for two years in preparation for the sacrament. These classes are held September through June in the Parish Center immediately following the 9:30 a.m. Mass.

Matrimony
Any couple interested in receiving the sacrament of Matrimony at St. Francis Church should contact Father Chris at least a year in advance. Couples will be expected to attend Pre-Cana classes.

Anointing of the Sick
An arrangement can be made by calling the Rectory.
